As of version 7 of our Sound Recorder and Editor, the PolderbitS Audio Driver installs itself to be the default playback and recording device in Windows. It's kind of a "virtual sound card".
This is what that means for:
| Audio playback |
Most audio playback software will check what the default playback device is in Windows and send their audio to that device. So being the default playback device, most audio playback software will send their audio to the PolderbitS Audio Driver.
On its turn, the PolderbitS Audio Driver forwards anything it receives to the actual sound card. So in the end it is still the actual sound card that's used for playback. The PolderbitS Audio Driver is just sitting in between the playback software and the actual sound card, thus allowing it to also forward the same digital audio to the Sound Recorder for recording. To check that the PolderbitS Audio Driver is indeed selected as the default playback device, follow these steps:
| XP: |
- Open the Windows Control Panel, by selecting Settings /
Control Panel in the Start menu of Windows.
- Double-click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon.
- Click on the Audio tab and at Sound playback on top, select the PolderbitS Audio Driver to be the default device and click on OK.
|
| Vista & 7: |
- Right-click on the little speaker icon
in the taskbar of Windows (in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, near the clock) and select Playback devices.
- Click on the PolderbitS Audio Driver to highlight it, click on Set Default below the list and then click on OK.
|
Audio playback software that does not check what the default playback device in Windows is, must be set up to play back tot the PolderbitS Audio Driver (or the Windows default playback device, which is the PolderbitS Audio Driver).
|
| Audio recording |
Recording from the PolderbitS Audio Driver will only work with our PolderbitS Sound Recorder version 7 (or higher).
Other software that records from our driver will only receive silence, so you must always setup such recording software to record from the sound card or audio device directly. Most audio recording software will automatically work properly if you change the default recording device in Windows.
To do that, follow these steps:
| XP: |
- Open the Windows Control Panel, by selecting Settings /
Control Panel in the Start menu of Windows.
- Double-click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon.
- Click on the Audio tab and at Sound recording in the middle, select your sound card to be the default device and click on OK.
|
| Vista & 7: |
- Right-click on the little speaker icon
in the taskbar of Windows (in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, near the clock) and select Recording devices.
Ignore any warning from the PolderbitS Audio Driver about recording just silence.
- Highlight the audio device that must be used by your recording software (usually the Microphone), click on Set Default below the list and then click on OK.
